General information
San Camp is located deep in the vast Kalahari Desert on the edge of the Makgadikgadi Pans, the largest saltpans in the world. You can see the curve of the earth from San Camp. Turn 360° and nothing crosses the eye but the bowl of the sky. It is the nothing-ness that attracts.
A safari to San Camp is also a complete desert experience focusing on species unique to the area such as aardvark, gemsbok and springbok. San Camp is unique in that its one of the only permanent camps to offer a chance to explore and understand the Kalahari. The concession adjoins the Makgadikgadi National Park with its endless vistas of rolling golden grasslands and desert palms line the horizon.
Six white canvas tents twinned with a dramatic location combine to create an oasis of civilization in what can be the harshest of stark environments.
Activities include venturing far into the centre of the Makgadikgadi on 4wd quad bikes to explore remote archaeological sites and going out on game drives or walks. The fact that you can travel across the pans at great speed and still arrive nowhere only underlines the pans immensity. The Kalahari desert is its own universe. It is the only place where guests are virtually guaranteed to see the rare and elusive brown hyaena and be able to walk through the Kalahari with a gang of habituated but, wild meerkats!

San Camp is located in a sparse forest of real fan palms, on the edge of Ntwetwe Pan, overlooking the Makgadikgadi Pans National Park.
Activities
• Drive into the grasslands and stop to watch the sun set and listen to an explanation of how the Makgadikgadi pans, the remnants of the world’s largest ever super-lake, were formed.
• Set off in the morning to visit some of the Kalahari’s meerkats. Get up close and personal with these captivating creatures.
• Visit a remote cattle-post to learn about the traditional culture of the Botswana people. Visit the famous Chapman’s Baobab which is acknowledged to be one of the largest trees in Africa
• Comb the edge of the extinct lake shore to find some of the many stone tools and fossils that litter the pan surface and learn of the origins of early man.
Rooms
San Camp consists of six classical 1940’s style spacious canvas tents with en-suite bathrooms. The bathrooms feature bucket showers and flushing toilets. Each tent has four-poster beds, private verandahs, mosquito net canopies, percale sheets, and paraffin lamps (no electricity).
Makgadikgadi Pans
Through the tent flaps, the Makgadikgadi Pans run over the horizon like the mother of all Norfolk beaches.
A relic of one of the world’s largest super-lakes, the Makgadikgadi dried up thousands of years ago as a result of the continued shifting of the earth’s crust.
When the lake was formed, some five to seven million years ago, its shores were the setting for the mysterious transition from ape to man.
