General information

Mombo Camp, on the northern tip of Chief's Island within the Moremi Game Reserve in the Okavango Delta, is built under large shady trees and overlooks an open floodplain more often than not alive with wildlife. This area boasts enormous concentrations of plains game and large predators - lions in particular - providing what is arguably the best big game viewing in Botswana.

Accommodation comprises nine spacious tents raised up to two meters off the ground, with breathtaking views over the plains; the sala, long veranda and lounge area all take advantage of such vistas. Bathrooms are en-suite, with indoor and outdoor showers. The main living and dining area is under thatch, there is a boma for delicious dinners under the stars and a plunge pool to relax in on a hot day.

Large concentrations of plains game occur in front of the camp and guests may view a variety of animals without even leaving the veranda. One often finds animals wandering past, right under the rooms!

Activities at Mombo mainly comprise morning and afternoon game drives in open 4x4 vehicles. These drives explore the savannah and floodplains and are exciting with prolific sightings of lion, leopard, cheetah, wild dog, elephant, spotted hyaena, southern giraffe, blue wildebeest, Burchell's zebra and large buffalo herds. Black and white rhino have been reintroduced with outstanding success to the area (albeit most are further away from camp), thanks to the Botswana Rhino Reintroduction Program.

The outstanding game presence at Mombo has made this area Botswana's top wildlife documentary location and National Geographic, the BBC and many others have filmed here.

Location

Mombo Camp lies on the northern tip of Chief's Island within the Moremi Game Reserve, the largest landmass in the Okavango Delta.

Rooms

Described by some guests as canvas ‘pavilions’ and not tents, the accommodation at Mombo is some of the most luxurious to be found throughout Africa. Mombo Camp has nine luxuriously furnished ‘pavilions’, all raised off the ground and connected by wooden walkways. The rooms are beautifully designed with private balconies giving you your very own view of the floodplain infront, double headed power showers in each of the ensuite bathrooms and huge four poster beds (and an additional outdoor shower for those of you wanting to shower under the stars!).

Big Cat Action

Lion and leopard sightings are particularly good with resident prides of lion being seen on virtually every game drive and leopard being so undeterred by people that they have been seen walking straight through camp (and on one occasion actually sitting on the dining table!). Due to the high numbers of big cats in this area, inter-predator interaction is a feature of safaris here.

Dining

The dining area, complete with a vast eucalyptus carved table, chunky made-to-order silver cutlery and canvas and teak directors chairs, has its own decking area where al fresco meals are served under the stars. Dining at Mombo is one of the camp's priorities, and something it excels at - tuna carpaccio and chilli calamari being just a couple of tasters of the head chef Craig’s menu - not many camps will attempt and succeed at seafood in a landlocked country.
