Botswana's Great Migration

The Savuti and Linyanti area borders on the Chobe National Park and is just above the Okavango Delta. A remote area consisting of swamp, grasslands reminiscent of the Serengeti and vast tracts of sandy plains, the Savuti Linyanti is the site of the annual zebra migration.

The zebra’s usually spend the winter in the Linyanti area before heading south to the Savuti in November in expectation of summer rains (between Dec and March) and good grazing. It is also here in the Savuti that you’ll find the greatest concentration of the King of all beasts, the Lion. The main attraction of Savuti is the abundance of game and predators to be seen. No matter what time of the year you visit the sizes of herds can be staggering!

During the dry winter months the Linyanti Reserve is highly populated with animals, particularly elephants which concentrate in enormous numbers at the rivers and waterholes. Game viewing at this time is usually excellent as the animals congregate around the scarce water supplies with the result that on safari you see high concentrations and wide ranges of species - both predators and prey and some jaw-dropping waterhole antics.

The remote location of the Savuti Linyanti ensures an authentic safari experience. The lodges are excellent
(read about the lodges or contact us to tailormake your safari) - small and intimate camps, superb game viewing and an unspoilt wilderness region are the trademark features of the Savuti Linyanti area.

There are fewer restrictions on game viewing in the Savuti Linyanti so you will go on night drives as well as conventional drives during daylight hours. Game viewing is also permitted ‘off road’, which certainly raises your chances of finding big game, particularly the predators, while another safari highlight is the prolific wild dog found in the Savuti Linyanti. These extremely elusive creatures make the wide open plains of this region their home and it’s relatively easy to track them on one of their hunts across these open spaces.

Of particular note are the beautiful sable and roan antelopes, the red lechwe and the aquatic sitatunga antelope which inhabit the Savuti Linyanti and unfortunately for them their main predators - lion, leopard, cheetah, wild dog and hyena - abound in great numbers as well. Birdlife is abundant and particularly vocal with a magnificent dawn chorus each day.

With a range of top quality lodges and experiences on offer, it’s a good idea to contact to one of our consultants about the best lodge to suit your holiday preferences. The Savuti and Linyanti area can combine perfectly with a stay in the Okavango Delta or a visit to Victoria Fallschat to us!

The Savuti Lions »

Lions truly are the king of beasts in Africa

While most people think elephants are immune to predation thanks to their size, nobody has told this to the Savuti lions. Hunting at night, when the elephant’s poor night vision puts them at a major disadvantage, the lions co-operate as a pride of about 30 individuals to bring down and dispatch elephant prey. National Geographic dramatically brought this to the World’s attention in a recent documentary. It is thought that the Savuti lions have learnt over time to kill bigger prey, each time winning success by the virtue of their large pride size.
