With over 2000km of Indian Ocean Coastline at it’s disposal, it’s no great surprise that Mozambique’s beautiful beaches are one of its main drawing cards. However, it is the abundant marine life that inhabits the waters off this immense stretch of coast that provides the holidaymaker with an endless list of activities. Over 1200 species of fish have been recognised along the coast of Mozambique, most of which live along the extensive coral reefs, many of which are on a par with the Great Barrier Reef of Australia.

Mozambique has two main Archipelago’s, where one can find the majority of accommodation on offer- namely the Bazaruto Archipelago in the South of the country and the Quirimbas Archipelago in the North. Both regions offer the holidaymaker rustic beach lodges in idyllic island settings making Mozambique perfect for honeymooners and those looking to get away from it all. In the Quirimbas, you can find a wide range of private island experiences all catering for the discerning traveller looking to get off the beaten track but still enjoy creature comforts.

Mozambique’s rich history provides many sites of interest for those looking for more than just a beach holiday. Over the centuries, this region has been dominated by a vast range of peoples and cultures from the Chinese and Arabs to the Portuguese and the English, all leaving behind them a vast array of influences, artifacts and architecture. Nowhere is this history more prevalent and accessible than on the Qurimbas Island of Ibo which is an absolute must on any Northern Mozambique itinerary even if it’s just for a half-day trip.

In more recent years Mozambique has added another string to its bow in the form of the Niassa Game Reserve in the country’s far North. This vast wilderness is easily accessible by air and is the ideal destination for the second or third time visitor to Africa looking for a different safari experience in one of the continent’s last truly ‘wild’ destinations. Niassa is home to over 12,000 elephants amongst other animal species and its location makes ideal for a bush and beach combination stay- after a safari here one can easily hop across to the Quirimbas Islands for a beach stay.
