The Quirimbas Archipelago

Endless white beaches, private island lodges, some of the world’s best dive sites, fascinating places of historical interest, the best seafood on the planet, an unspoilt remote natural wilderness; in Northern Mozambique, this is the everyday reality.

Easily as accessible from Kenya and Tanzania in East Africa as it is from Southern Africa, Northern Mozambique is fast emerging as the region’s leading destination for those seeking beautiful beaches and relaxation. The area largely remains an undiscovered gem, well off the beaten tourist track and perfect for the adventurous traveller looking for more than just another beach hotel experience.

The region’s main hub is a major site of interest in itself. Pemba’s rich colonial past is evident today in the dramatic buildings and thoroughfares that line the Bay’s shoreline even today. A guided tour around this former colonial outpost brings the area’s history to life and is utterly fascinating.

Most holidaymakers tend to use Pemba as the gateway to the Quirimbas Archipelago, a largely untouched 150km stretch of coral islands running North from Pemba. To visit the Quirimbas is to come face to face with idyllic Island bliss. As one is transferred by air from Pemba, it soon becomes clear that you have arrived in a very special part of the World indeed. Uninhabited islands, private island lodges and tiny villages where customs and the way of life have remained unchanged for centuries all pan out before you and as you arrive at your chosen retreat it really does feel like you have landed in a tropical paradise.

As well as the obvious attractions of rest and relaxation, stunning seafood and fine wines, it is the quality of Northern Mozambique’s snorkeling and diving that remain a major drawing card for the holidaymaker. The area is quite rightly acknowledged as offering some of the world’s best dive sites and all of our lodges offer professional dive centres and instructors to facilitate your experience here.

In this part of the world, the picture postcard beaches literally stretch for miles and miles and the best thing of all- you are quite unlikely to come into any other human contact on a lengthy stroll from your lodge. Northern Mozambique is remote, private and peaceful Africa at its very best.

However, its coastline and marine life are not the only thing that draws the holidaymaker to Northern Mozambique. In recent years, a huge effort has been made to open up the vast Niassa Reserve, approximately one hours flying time West of Pemba, for photographic safaris - good game viewing, a small and intimate luxury tented camp in Lugenda and a dozen experiences that will leave one craving Niassa’s wide open spaces long after returning to the ‘real world’ back home combine excellently with a Northern Mozambique beach vacation. Lugenda’s close proximity to the Quirimbas Islands makes it easy for us to create the perfect bush and beach itinerary for you.

Northern Mozambique is the perfect destination for those who want to enjoy the sun, surf and underwater splendours on offer in the warm waters of the Indian Ocean. The scattered islands are a true slice of paradise just waiting to be enjoyed by anyone who is willing to go the extra mile in search of true peace and beauty. Facinating Ibo Island Tour »

Historic building

Ibo Island is part of the beautiful Quirimbas Archipelago. The island supports one of the oldest towns in Mozambique, and is definitely one of the most interesting and atmospheric towns in the whole country. Mentioned in Arab writings as early as the 8th Century Ibo has, over time, been influenced by various peoples and customs including Arab, Chinese and more recently Portuguese. An Ibo Island tour is makes for a fascinating excursion and walking around its creaking ruins and once beautiful squares, one can extract a real sense of what the place would have been like in its heyday - the old fort alone makes the visit worthwhile.
