Coastal Route
Fast Facts
The seaside town of Knysna, along with its neighbour Plettenberg Bay just to the East has become one of the Cape's premier holiday destinations with a dramatic coastline and an endless list of activities to satisfy the tastes of any holidaymaker.
South Africa's Most Loved...
Take a drive along the Coastal Route and you won’t be hard pressed to figure out why this is said to be the heart of the Garden of Eden. On one side of the road you have long unspoilt beaches, the oceans teeming with whales and dolphins, while on the opposite side thick indigenous forests hide monkeys, birds and even elephants.
Idyllic seaside villages like Knsyna and Plettenberg Bay are nestled in the coves and bays along the way, each with its own charm; full of friendly faces, relaxed waterfront restaurants and numerous activities for you to enjoy. You have a choice of lodges which are hidden away in the lush surroundings or ocean –fronted with sunny beaches steps away.
The Coastal Route winds its way through mountainous river gorges opening suddenly onto wide ocean views, before continuing past island filled lakes and then into forest thickets. Ancient trees with imaginative nicknames like ‘the big tree’ make for beautiful rest stops, and short walks occasionally lit by steadfast rays of sun which have battled their way through the dense canopies, are the perfect excuse to stretch your legs along the way.

All in all the Coastal Route is South Africa’s most popular playground. From young to old everyone who visits this area delights in all it has to offer and returns time and again. The highest standards in luxury accommodation and service are on offer in this area, yet even their splendor pales in comparison to the sheer beauty and fun that nature serves up to those lucky enough to spend their vacations in this Garden of Eden.
Besides all the scenic splendor the Coastal Route is also the adventure capital of South Africa. The deep gorges which scar the countryside are home to both South Africa’s bungy jumps and test the mettle of even the hardiest of adventurers. The forests hide 30 meter high zip lines which take tree-top explorers on unique canopy tours, and the mountains – not wanting to be left out – have numerous biking trails, from suicidal to plain old leisurely. Skydivers also rate the Coastal area as a favourite jump spot – if you don’t like the idea of plummeting to earth with only a parachute and a prayer then maybe a helicopter flip will suffice.
All our Travel Experts regularly visit the Coastal Route area and would be only too happy to share their knowledge and experience with you. Enquire with any of them for advice on planning your vacation and they will take care of all the finer details so all you need to do is arrive and enjoy.
Highlights
Vibrant Knysna »
Two of Knysna’s biggest draw cards are the Knysna Lagoon guarded by two cliffs known as the The Heads and the new Waterfront complex. The lagoon, popular amongst boating enthusiasts, water-skiers and fishermen, harbours a variety of fish and waterbirds, crabs, prawns and the very rare sea horse. A cruise on one of the many leisure boats that ply the Lagoon is highly recommended.
Plettenberg's Beaches »
Plettenberg Bay boasts some of the best beaches on the Garden Route. Central Beach is the busiest beach in town and has facilities that include restaurants and bars. Robberg Beach is probably our favourite and is perfect for long strolls as it stretches for many kilometers between the Robberg Peninsula and Beacon Island. Warm waters make for perfect swimming and Plett is also famed for excellent waves for surfing.
