The oldest, and smallest, sector of Addo Elephant National Park was established in 1931 to promote the survival of only 11 African elephant which, from 1900 onwards, had evaded the guns of the 19th and early 20th Century hunters and merciless neighbouring farmers.

Conservation in this region is about the management, development and rehabilitation of the environment to create a sustainable ecosystem through the implementation of fundamental conservation principals. Guests at Shamwari Game Reserve have the opportunity to visit their Born Free Foundation Animal Rescue Centre which, over the years has been able to rescue big cats from dangerous situations and look after them with a lifetime of care.
A major attraction of the Garden Route Safari Region is the logistical ease in which one can reach the area. It’s location at the end of South Africa’s famous Garden Route makes it a perfect addition to any self-drive itinerary, whether it be at the start or end of your trip. The Game Reserves are a mere 45 minute drive from Port Elizabeth Airport.

Getting there
The Garden Route Safari Region is an extremely convenient and accessible safari option.
The game reserves are located within a 1 hour radius of Port Elizabeth at the end of the Garden Route coast.
Holidaymakers on a self-drive itinerary can easily make their own way to their Reserve accommodation.
Alternatively, Port Elizabeth Airport can be reached by air from Cape Town, Johannesburg and Durban. Guests can be met on arrival and transferred to their safari accommodation.
