Sabi Sands Game Reserve
Fast Facts
The 65,000-hectare Sabi Sands is a very exclusive private game reserve located on the south-western corner of the Kruger National Park. There are no restricting fences between the Kruger Park and Sabi Sands so the wildlife roams freely between the two game reserves.
Stalking the elusive Leopard
The Sabi Sands Private Game Reserve is the best known of the game reserves in the Kruger National Park area. An exclusive reserve, its unfenced border joins that of the Greater Kruger National Park so the wildlife roams freely.
The Sabi Sands is without a doubt the best area in the world to view leopard - one of the legendary Big Five which are also present in large numbers. It is not uncommon to spot all the members of the Big Five family in one game drive in this astounding safari reserve.
The lodges within the Sabi Sands have managed to completely outclass and outshine many of Africa’s safari destinations when it comes to luxury accommodation, quality rangers and game viewing experiences. Coordination between the various lodges has established considerate game viewing practices and the ranger-tracker teams who take you out on your early morning, evening and even night safaris in the open 4x4 safari vehicles are experts in the surrounding bush and offer you the best chance of getting close to the big game in the area.
The success of viewing leopard in the Sabi Sands is legendary. The leopards have become accustomed to the 4x4 vehicles and are not bothered by their presence. This means that you can follow the leopards in critical situations like hunting – something you can do nowhere else in the world. Mating, very young cubs, hunting, kills and all the other behaviours that make up a leopard's life can be seen in astonishingly close proximity to these elusive cats. The other animals such as elephant, rhino, lion, buffalo, cheetah, zebra, giraffe and a variety of antelope and a vast number of other species can also be observed closely within their own ranges, though big herds of game are less prominent in this area – it is famed more for the unrivalled sightings of big cats.
Walking safaris are also on offer and allow you to take yourself back to nature in an exhilarating few hours of silently strolling through the wildlife filled African bushveld with you armed ranger.

The surrounding Kruger Private Reserves and the Kruger Concessions offer different habitats and it is a good idea to split your time in the Kruger between these areas. Each has its own beauty, but more importantly the differing vegetation in each area attracts different wildlife species which will give you an entirely different safari experience.
Within the Sabi Sands the lodges themselves are truly amazing and completely unfenced. Rangers will walk you back to your room at night and during the day you will be able to view small antelope wandering the paths between the various rooms. Private plunge pools overlook waterholes, and luxurious outdoor baths and showers are perfect for languishing under the stars.
Meals are prepared by gourmet chefs and taken in a variety of locations. Dry river bed dinners, or meals around the Boma’s (fire-pits) bring an African flavor to your experience. Sipping on vintage wines while staring into the star filled sky and listening to the night calls emanating from the nearby bush will instantly relax you. When the time finally comes, you will find it hard to leave these incredible surroundings.
Each of the luxury lodges within the Sabi Sands owns its own piece of land, creating a subset of private reserves within the prestigious Sabi Sands area. Agreements between the lodges allow safaris to cross into all the different properties so your safari experience is not affected. What is affected is the way in which this allows the lodges to manage the amount of vehicles in the area at any one time and therefore ensure a genuine safari experience where you will not be bothered by a horde of other vehicles intruding on your safari.
A Sabi Sands safari embraces true African hospitality in the lap of ultimate luxury. The wide range of lodges offer will cater to your every whim. Ask one of our Travel Experts for some advice on which lodge will best suit your tastes. They will also help you to arrange all your transport and coordinate your further itinerary, using their extensive knowledge of the areas to help you successfully combine the best that Africa has to offer.

Insider tips
Ask us about the amazing sleep out option in the Sabi Sands where you sleep under the stars.
Bring your bathing suit as many of the lodges in the Sabi Sands have private plunge pools in the suites.
If you are looking for a romantic evening, many of the lodges offer a private dining option - in your suite, in a dry river bed or a bush dinner.
Pack your binoculars and camera!
Consider combining your safari in the Sabi Sands with one of the private reserves further north - the landscape and scenery differ greatly.
What to pack
In the bushveld, nobody dresses up, and most of the private lodges have laundry facilities which means you could probably get away with just a few changes of clothes.
Avoid bright colours and white - neutral hues are best for game-viewing and bird watching.
Nights can be chilly, especially in winter so pack a warm sweater or anorak.
Among other items in your luggage should be a swimming costume, a sun hat, sturdy walking shoes, personal toiletries that include lip balm and sun-protection cream, good sunglasses, binoculars, camera and also a bird and mammal field-guide.
Getting there
The best way to get to the Sabi Sands Game Reserve is to fly directly into the lodges. Federal Air operates daily flights that depart from Johannesburg at 09h30, 11h30 and 13h30.
Alternatively you can fly into Kruger Mpumalanga Airport from Johannesburg, Cape Town and Durban and then be transferred to the lodges either by road or short flight. Flying is like doing short air safari.
Another option is to drive from Johannesburg. This takes about 5 hours and is great should you be visiting the surrounding areas in the Kruger.
