General Information

Home to the family of the last prime minister of the Colony of Natal, Hartford House is situated on South Africa's most famous thoroughbred farms near Giant's Castle.

Hartford House has fourteen incomparably-styled luxury suites with under floor heating, heated towel rails and generous bathrooms. Renowned for its location on one of the world's most enchanting estates, as well as its proximity to the Midlands Meander, Weenen and Drakensberg game and mountain reserves and Boschhoek Golf Estate, Hartford is revered by travelers as the home of good conversation, old whiskey and classic horses.

Apart from visits to the Drakensberg which is a World Heritage site, awarded due to its magnificent beauty and the ancient Bushman rock and cave art, you will find many other activities to enjoy at Hartford House. The mountain streams and rivers are excellent for trout and bass fishing and long horse rides surrounded by towering mountain buttresses are not to be missed. Horse lover will delight in a personalised tour of Summerhill Stud Farm.

The award-winning restaurant at Hartford House has received numerous awards and serves sumptuous meals either overlooking the magnificent gardens or in the candle-lit dining hall. It has one of only 10 five-star wine lists in South Africa.

Hartford House is situated on South Africa's most famous thoroughbred farm near Giant's Castle, in close proximity to the famous Midlands meander and the Drakensberg Mountains.
