Durban & KZN South Coast
Fast Facts
Durban is South Africa's third largest metropolis, after Johannesburg and Cape Town, and foremost seaport (the harbour is Africa's biggest and busiest and is ranked ninth in the World).
The Golden Mile
Durban is a sophisticated cosmopolitan city of over three million people where east meets west and beneath which beats the pulse of Africa. Durban is popular for its superb swimming and surfing beaches, restaurants and nightspots, shopping complexes and uShaka Marine world. It’s a fun city to visit for a night or two, which makes the fact that this is the starting point for all ventures into the Kwa Zulu Natal safari area and the St Lucia Wetlands all the more appealing.
The Durban beaches, which stretch from the Point northwards as far as the eye can see, offer sailing, snorkelling, scuba, swimming, surfing and fishing in the warm shark-net protected waters of the Indian Ocean. The most well known section of beachfront is the Golden Mile. It stretches six kilometres (four miles) along the sandy Indian Ocean shoreline and, in addition to the beaches it offers paddling pools, pavilions, piers, amusement parks, colourful markets, and eating places. Special features are the rickshaws - lightly built carts pulled by Zulu ‘drivers’, both elaborately decked out in beads, furs and streamers.

At the end of the Golden Mile uShaka Marine World has daily dolphin shows and is Africa’s largest marine theme park, and something not to be missed if you find yourself in Durban. A short walk along the beachfront leads to another wildlife experience – the Fitzsimon’s Snake Park on Snell Parade, North Beach. The park contains a fine collection of exotic and indigenous species plus crocodiles, leguaans (iguanas) and terrapins.
Further inland from the city you will reach the steep slopes and plunging gorges of the beautiful Valley of 1000 Hills where rural communities live according to age-old traditions. Here are situated craft villages, safari parks and sites offering traditional Zulu dancing.
Durban is surrounded by some of the most beautiful and pristine natural landscape in South Africa. The St Lucia Wetland Park is a World Heritage site, as are the Drakensberg Mountains. The Kwa Zulu Safari area holds the Phinda and the Hluhluwe-Imfolozi game reserves which means you can easily combine a Big 5 safari with a beach holiday.

Highlights
uShaka Marine World »
The unique Sea World at uShaka Marine World showcases the diversity of marine life found in the Western Indian Ocean. On ground level, as guests wander through beautifully landscaped gardens filled with many indigenous plants, the aquarium is visible from the surface. Guests can gaze into all of the larger exhibits from the surface and, in the shallower exhibits, this provides a unique 'birds eye' view of the fish and sharks.
South Coast Beaches »
Popularly known as the Golf Coast thanks to a comprehensive selection of fine golf courses, the KwaZulu Natal South Coast is a 120km stretch of inviting Indian Ocean, expansive golden beaches and unique variant of sub-tropical Bush. This scenic, relaxed route stretches from Durban Metro and the Zulu Kingdom's southernmost reaches. The South Coast is particularly suitable for those on a self-drive itinerary and is easily accessible from Durban.
Insider tips
Durban and its coastline are the perfect addition to any tour of South Africa with a beautiful year round climate.
Sample the local speciality, the Bunny Chow, which is half a loaf of bread scoped out and filled with curry.
Try and avoid Durban's Golden Mile beach- it can become seriously crowded.
Keen golfers should head down Durban's South Coast and take on one of the scenic but seriously challenging links courses in the region such as San Lameer.
For those looking for somewhere lively to go out and party, look no further than the town of Umhlanga Rocks, a twenty minute drive North of Durban.
Getting around
Durban's International Airport is 15 minutes from the city centre. A bus service operates between the airport and city centre. Taxis are also available and preferable to the bus.
The mini-cab tuk tuks and mozziecabs are good for short trips and organised city tours. Car-hire firms are plentiful and are readily represented at the airport.
A corner of India
A few blocks to the west of the city centre is a colourful and exotic world of mosques and temples, where bright saris mingle with the more prosaic styles of the west.
The focal point is the Victoria Street Indian market, a large and busy place of bargaining and bartering housed in a huge domed building. If you spend some time in Durban, this is an absolute must.
