The entire Kwa Zulu Safari area is rich in historical and cultural significance. It was here that Shaka forged his Zulu Kingdom, and Zulu kraals or villages in the region display the traditional Zulu way of life to visitors. There are several traditional Zulu villages open to the public, Shakaland and Duma Zulu amongst them. Shakaland is built on the site of Shaka’s original kraal and the village introduces the visitor to Zulu history, culture, even medicine and beer, and traditional dancing.

The Kwa Zulu Natal Safari Region offers visitors so much more than the conventional Big Five safari experience. The area's huge variety of geography and natural habitats lends itself to a truly all encompassing safari experience. A traditional safari is augmented by a wide variety of additional activities such as mokoro (canoe) safaris, boat cruises on the lake systems and guided bush walks. We strongly recommend combining one of the Big Five reserves with a stay at a lodge located on one of the major lake systems such as Makakatana Bay Lodge.
