General information

Rocktail Bay is situated in the northern reaches of the iSimangaliso (formerly Greater St Lucia) Wetland Park in northern KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa. This whole area has been declared a World Heritage Site.

Rocktail Beach Camp is located about 30 minutes drive from Rocktail Bay Lodge and is situated at the current Rocktail Dive Centre. The camp is set back in and shaded by the sanctuary of the lush coastal forest that covers the ancient dunes that make up the edge of South Africa's north-east coast.

The camp consists of 12 rooms (including 3 family units), most of which have a view of the ocean. All have en-suite bathrooms, open-feel indoor shower and overhead fans. Rocktail Beach Camp also has a central dining room, bar and lounge with large wrap around veranda. A television set and iPod are available in the camp's main area for guests' enjoyment, as well as a large pool.

From a scuba diving perspective, Rocktail Bay is unique. Not only is the diving conducted within a Reserve and World Heritage Site along unspoiled reefs, but divers have the luxury of knowing that they alone have access to these sites and are the only underwater visitors along this stretch of the coastline.

Location

Rocktail Beach Camp is located in the Maputaland Coastal Forest Reserve in northern Kwazulu-Natal midway between Kosi Bay to the north and Sodwana Bay to the south.

Rooms and Attractions

The lodge consists of 11 rustic ‘tree-house’ chalets. Each enjoys its own balcony and en-suite bathroom with hot and cold running water and flushing toilets. There is also an invigorating outdoor shower hidden in the forest. The central area has a comfortable lounge, well-stocked pub and a refreshing pool. Guests can enjoy delicious home-cooked cuisine in the main dining room, by the pool or under the shade of a huge mahogany tree.

The Diving

Rocktail Bay is renowned for its superb diving and snorkelling opportunities. The Maputaland Marine Reserve is situated just offshore from Rocktail and enables guests to encounter dolphins, whales and huge shoals of colourful fish. 11km south of the camp, guests can experience unrivalled snorkelling and scuba diving on the amazingly fertile coral reefs found just offshore from the camp’s own fully accredited dive centre.
