Within a 15 minute drive of leaving the bustling Waterfront area, you can find yourself trundling along the Constantia Wine Route, a slow winding drive through ancient trees and vines that remain untouched since the time of the Cape’s first settlers, an entire region unaffected by the developments and ravages of time.

No place sums up the sheer natural beauty of the Constantia Winelands region more than the sprawling Kirstenbosch Botanical Gardens. Founded in 1913 to preserve and propogate South Africa’s rich floral heritage, the gardens are today recognized as one of the world’s most respected botanical gardens. A couple of hours spent wandering through this stunning setting is a great addition to any Cape Town itinerary.
If you head a further ten minutes south of Kirstenbosch, you will stumble across the Steenberg Estate, the oldest of all the farms in the Constantia Winelands region. Steenberg now boasts a world-class hotel, championship golf course and wine estate and we highly recommend it as a base from which to explore Cape Town.
The real attraction of staying in the Constantia Winelands is that you are perfectly situated to explore all that the City has to offer. You are never really more than 15 or 20 minutes from any of the major attractions despite the fact that you feel like you really are in a different world- a beautiful paradise within a beautiful city.

Kirstenbosch Gardens »
Founded in 1913 to preserve and propagate South Africa's rich floral heritage are Kirstenbosch Gardens. The gardens sprawl over some 530ha of Table Mountain's well watered southern slopes and today are recognized as one of the world's most respected botanical gardens. There are a number of delightful walks through herb and fragrance gardens, a pelargonium koppie, a cycad amphitheatre and trails lead through the forests of yellowwood and silver trees. There is an impressive visitors centre, gift shop and restaurant.
Wine Tasting »
The fertile Constantia Valley with its moderate climate and rich soil is the birthplace of the wine farming industry in South Africa. As you drive through the beautiful historical valley it is no wonder that the first Govenor of the Cape, Simon van der Stel, chose Constantia as his farm to cultivate and develop. Today there are five top wine estates in the Valley producing world famous wines. Spend the day making your way to each of these estates to sample these award winning wines. Constantia Uitsig and Groot Constantia Wine Estates have fantastic lunch time restaurants.

Golf Courses
There are two top golf courses in area:
Steenberg - The Steenberg Golf Club is an exclusive, private golf club set in idyllic surroundings. This 18-hole championship golf course was designed to make full use of natural features and hazards such as the vineyards, pine forest and gentle waterways. Its environmental diversity gives the course its unique character and it is renowned for having the best greens in Cape Town.
Westlake: With panoramic views of the Cape Peninsula Mountains, Westlake has a very interesting, yet user-friendly design and quite a few doglegs. The course an easy to walk, 18 hole Par 72 golf course characterised by the towering trees, which line many of its fairways. If you manage to stay out of the trees, you will achieve a good score.
Wine Estates
There are currently five wine estates in the the Constantia valley:
Groot Constantia: this is the oldest and stateliest of the homesteads, dates from the the late 17th century and is notable for its architecture, period furniture, two-storeyed wine cellar, museum and lovely grounds. There are daily wine sales, with some superlative vintages on offer, cellar tours, a horse and carriage for hire, picnic lunches and three restaurants.
Klein Constantia: this estate is much smaller and more private with a modern cellar. It is renowned for its dessert wines.
Constantia Uitsig: boasts award winning wines, three world-renowned restaurants , a private cricket oval, spa and 16-roomed luxury hotel. Wine Tasting is offered everyday at a charge of R 20 per person.
Buitenverwachting: this homestead houses one of the country's best restaurants. The impresssive complex has a gabled house, cellars, slave quarters and stables that have all been beautifully restored. Many of the wines have won international acclaim. The cellar tours are conducted by appointment and tasting and sales are a daily feature.
Steenberg: this is the oldest of all the farms and produces wine of superior quality. The estate has an excellent restaurant, golf course, spa and five star hotel.
