General information

Nestled between the peaks of Mount Meru and Mount Kilimanjaro, Mount Meru Game Lodge & Sanctuary lies midway between Kilimanjaro International Airport and Arusha. The lodge is located within 33 acres of mature, well manicured gardens bounded on one side by the tranquil waters of the Usa River and on the other by the Sanctuary where wildlife and birdlife reside. This wildlife and birdlife provide many guests with their first exciting game viewing experience.

Established in 1959, the lodge was created to provide intimate accommodation to discerning lovers of both wildlife and nature. The sanctuary was founded to offer refuge to orphaned and injured animals and to prepare them for their return to the wild.

The lodge comprises 15 double or twin en-suite bedrooms and 2 newly constructed suites. The design and character of the rooms are as individualistic as the lodge itself and combine well with the animal sanctuary, offering you a truly unique experience during your stay in Arusha.

Facilities include a terrace, shaded by enormous old Mango trees which enjoy magnificent views over mature, carefully tended gardens to the Sanctuary beyond. The lounge, with its enormous picture windows and comfortable furniture, provides for complete relaxation in intimate surroundings. The bar is well stocked with a wide selection of spirits, beers and minerals which are complemented by a carefully selected collection of fine wines and the fine dining room provides the perfect setting for a relaxing meal, prepared and served by the attentive yet very discreet staff.

Location

Nestled between the peaks of Mount Meru and Mount Kilimanjaro, Mount Meru Game Lodge & Sanctuary lies midway between Kilimanjaro International Airport and Arusha.

Rooms

The lodge has 15 double or twin en-suite bedrooms and 2 newly constructed suites. All rooms have a veranda with comfortable chairs where guests may sit during the late afternoons enjoying the peace of the surroundings, soaking up the unique atmosphere and watching the animal and birdlife. The suites are located in their own private garden and are ideal also for families and small groups to whom privacy is very important.

Arusha

Arusha is a delightful little town tucked away at the foot of the impressive Mt Meru and has become the official gateway to Tanzania’s Northern Safari circuit. Most visitors spend one evening here either at the beginning or at the end of their safaris. Arusha is a lovely, peaceful place in which to break your journey and also boasts some of the best craft markets in East Africa.

The Sanctuary

The main emphasis of the Game Sanctuary is to provide safe haven to African plains game and birds. These include eland, ostriches, waterbucks, zebras, buffalo, small carnivores such as Monitor lizards, small wild cats and of course the enormous variety of birdlife who come to feed, breed and enjoy the unique freedom offered in a very safe environment. In a specially designed, enclosed area of the grounds you can also find magnificent old owls, porcupine, turtle and even a crocodile. The majority of the animals were once either orphaned or badly injured and were brought to the sanctuary for rehabilitation.
