General information

Perched on the jagged rim of the crater the Ngorongoro Serena Safari Lodge is a triumph of ecological and architectural fusion. Sensitively constructed so as to take nothing from its environment the Lodge offers endless vistas over the heat-shimmering reaches of the crater below.

This 75 room lodge offers guests all the creature comforts that one would expect from a hotel whilst blending in seamlessly with its surroundings. Most of the rooms have private terraces with views of the crater floor where countless animals make their home. Due to this spectacular location, the Ngorongoro Serena is a very popular lodge!

The main lodge has spacious lounge areas and a grand dining room with floor to ceiling windows overlooking the crater. Masaai dancing, local musicians and other cultural events are put on most evenings. Nature walks with local Maasai guides offer cultural insights into the natural habitat of the Ngorongoro Conservation Area.

At Ngorongoro Serena Lodge visitors co-exist in perfect harmony with the natural environment and the wildlife that inhabits it.

Our view

Ngorongoro Serena is ideal for those looking for the creature comforts of a larger lodge in a top location.

  • One of the most remarkable lodge settings
  • We recommend a two-night stay in the crater region
  • It’s great to combine this region with a safari in the Serengeti National Park
  • Only downside is that the lodge does tend to fill up with larger tour groups

Activities

There are a wide range of activities on offer in and around the Ngorongoro Crater region. The highlight of any stay here is a half day crater tour with your expert guide. There are a wide variety of interesting scenic heights in this region to cater for all levels of fitness. For those looking for cultural interaction, the nearby Masaai village offers and excellent opportunity to learn more about the Masaai way of life. Day trips to Olduvai Gorge, the so-called “cradle of mankind” can easily be arranged from here.

Rooms

Each of the 75 rooms are strung around the crater rim, with rock-enclosed balconies and enjoy uninterrupted views over the Crater's unmatched splendor. The rooms feature brass lamps, embossed leather headboards, wildwood mirrors and Maasai carvings and each has an en suite modern bathroom with central heating

Ngorongoro Region

The Ngorongoro Conservation Area was established in 1959, most of it having previously belonged to the now contiguous Serengeti National Park. And, surprisingly, the Ngorongoro Crater is only one of many natural attractions that are contained within its vast boundaries. These include both dormant and active volcanoes, soaring mountains, archaeological treasures, rolling plains, rivers, forests, lakes and shifting sand dunes whilst almost half of the Ngorongoro is made up of vast tracts of open grassland.
