General information
This low-key lodge is quietly situated on the warmer banks of Lake Ndutu just outside the Southern Serengeti. The camp is small and charming and offers basic but good-quality accommodation. The surrounding area is excellent for birdwatching, with an astounding 400 species of birds listed on the camp records.
Ndutu is excellently placed in the middle of the path of the Great Migration, which covers the nearby plains in November through to March. Its small thatched stone rooms are designed in a utilitarian block style, but are well placed in a wild, ground-level location with wildlife potentially close at hand and the chance to sit back and enjoy great, silent, uninterrupted sunsets.
The central areas are comfortable and well designed, with the bar and dining room open-sided to make the most of incredibly fresh air and views beneath plenty of grand makuti thatch and wooden beams. Ndutu is run as a joint venture with Gibbs Farm, which supplies masses of fresh home-grown produce to embellish the dining tables each day.
Our view
Ndutu is an excellent value safari lodge located in one of the prime game viewing areas for the migration.
- We strongly recommend pre-booking Ndutu well in advance- it’s often heavily booked
- Good to combine with a lodge further North in the Serengeti
- Ndutu is a good idea for those keen to cut journey times
- Easily some of the best food we’ve had on Tanzania’s Northern Safari circuit

Ndutu is located in the heart of the Serengeti Plain, at the head of Olduvai Gorge with the mighty backdrop of the Ngorongoro Crater highlands.
Rooms
Ndutu Safari Lodge consists of 34 stone cottages that extend from the central, open-sided bar, lounge and dining room. Each room has its own verandah that overlooks Lake Ndutu. All rooms have en-suite facilities. Ten rooms have a double bed, and there are five triple rooms. There is also one family room, which can accommodate up to 2 adults and 2 children.
Activities
Between December and March, Ndutu finds itself at the centre of a huge migration of Wildebeest and Zebra. Other activities include; taking a day off to relax whilst reading or writing those post cards, observing wildlife close up and personal around the lodge, contemplate an ancient, twisted acacia tree, marvel at the variety of our birds (there are 400 species to choose from) or stroll through the woods with a ranger.
Dining
The food is particularly good at Ndutu and the lodge prides itself on its ‘home-style’ of cooking. Fresh produce is bought in on a regular basis from Gibbs’ Farm in the Ngorongoro Highlands guaranteeing an extremely high quality of food flowing from the kitchen. Don’t expect haute cuisine here- the cuisine is hearty, very tasty and extremely substantive. Expect to put on a couple of kilos here over a three-night stay!
