General information

Remote Africa Safaris offer an unsurpassed walking experience in the Luangwa Valley. Chikoko Walking Trails in the South Luangwa National Park are conducted in a very beautiful area, rich in wildlife. It is a wilderness area, free of roads and vehicles.
Chikoko Walking Trails operate slightly upstream of Tafika Camp on the West bank of the Luangwa, utilizing two exclusive bush camps named Chikoko Tree Camp and Crocodile River Camp.

David Livingstone crossed the Luangwa River in 1866 at Perekani, the crossing point used for Chikoko Trails today, and made the following note in his journal:"I will make this land better known to men that it may become one of their haunts. It is impossible to describe its luxuriance."

Chikoko Tree Camp is situated 8km upstream of Tafika. As the name suggests the 3 twin chalets are raised above the ground, within the tree canopy. This enhances the view of the acacia grove in front of camp where a constant array of wildlife activity unfolds throughout the day.

Location

Chikoko Walking Trails operate slightly upstream of Tafika on the West bank of the Luangwa river.

A Typical Day

Set in a pristine area of wilderness your guide will be able to teach you about the plants, animals, birds, and local folklore interlinked with them. Mid way you'll stop under a shady Ebony tree for tea, and learn how to make fire with sticks to brew your morning coffee or tea. Continue your walk to Crocodile Camp and rest and refresh before a delicious lunch. Mid afternoon you will have the opportunity to enjoy a shorter afternoon walk and a chance to look for more game and experience the sights, sounds and scents of the bush.

Rooms

Crocodile River Camp has 3 chalets imaginatively constructed of thatch and natural materials–delightfully simple, perfectly comfortable. It rests beneath a grove of magnificent ebony trees, overlooking a dambo and the action of a day in the wild.

Logistics

Guests transferring to/from Tafika would normally do so as part of the morning or afternoon walking activity. Direct routes to camp would be used for guests arriving late in the day. It is best to avoid late arrivals into Mfuwe if guests are transferring directly to either of the Chikoko Walking Trails camps.
