General information

Tena Tena in Zambia’s South Luangwa National Park has become an African home-away-from-home for globetrotters worldwide. The words “Tena Tena” mean "temporary home" in the local language, and for many people this exclusive camp is their very own safari nirvana.

Together, the Popes have made Tena Tena one of the best safari camps in Zambia. Some camps are itinerary-driven, but at Tena Tena the emphasis is on flexibility which is the Pope’s style. Daily activities include walks under the guidance of highly trained guides, and star-spangled night drives in 4x4 Land Cruisers. Guests who feel in need of total rest and relaxation do not need to venture far from the camp to spot game, as there are always sightings within the vicinity.

Tena Tena has just five large stylish and intimate luxury tents pitched along the edge of a water hole. It is even possible to view game from the comfort of your bed with the side of the tent rolled up. Or you can sit quietly on your verandah, sipping a cool drink, watching families of warthogs wallowing in the mud and elephants munching on the winter thorn pods.

Location

Tena Tena Camp lies within the South Luangwa National Park and enjoys a stunning location on a sweeping bend of the Luangwa River. The camp is near the Lunga Lagoon, one of the most important water holes in the National Park.

Rooms

Tena Tena's five large luxury tents are spacious and decorated in rich tones from Arabia. The Persian rugs, hand-dyed Indian cotton bedspreads and Bedouin cushions create a simple, homely feel. Walk through the tent and you will find a private dressing room that leads into a unique open-air bathroom with separate toilet, shower and sink. The shower overlooks the water hole, so you can shower in the mornings while watching elephants drinking 30 yards away – an incredible experience.

Activities

  • Guided bush walks
  • Day and night drives in open 4x4 vehicles
  • Game viewing from Camp
  • Rest and relaxation
  • Fly camping
  • Cultural Day at Kawaza Village

Community

For the last 10 years Robin Pope Safaris has supported a school in the Nsefu Village area. Kawaza School now has the reputation in Zambia of being a great example of how help from tourism can improve a community, and the village tourism project (now run by the community) has won major international awards. The camp and funds from the tourism projects are used to rebuild the two schools and pay for 12 teacher's salaries.
