The Lair of the African Wild Dog

Madikwe is a 75,000 hectare malaria free Game Reserve located a three hour drive or one hour flight time from Johannesburg. Madikwe has a fast growing a reputation as a world class safari destination and time after time, visitors are returning with glowing reports.

Whether you are travelling on your honeymoon or on a once in a lifetime family holiday, Madikwe is absolutely ideal. Guided game drives in open top 4×4 safari vehicles are an incredible experience as you come face to face with the “Big Five” as well as other smaller species including Wild Dog, one of the rarest and most rewarding of wildlife sightings.

Due to its logistical simplicity Madikwe fits easily into any tailor-made itinerary of South Africa whether it is at the beginning or end of your tour. Madikwe has a wide range of luxury safari lodge accommodation with friendly, well-trained local staff and beautiful architecture, carefully designed to take advantage of the lie of the land and to be as unobtrusive, yet luxurious as possible.

The Madikwe Game Reserve consists of vast plains of open woodlands and grasslands and is dotted with huge rocky hills. This terrain makes for excellent game viewing opportunities, which are enhanced by the high levels of training that the ranger –tracker teams have undergone.

Madikwe’s diverse geology and broad mix of habitats allows a wide range of African wildlife to flourish. Madikwe is home to 66 large mammal species including the Big Five and approximately 300 resident and migrant bird species. Not only does this reserve boast the ‘Big Five’ but it also has the ‘Super 7’! This adds cheetah and wild dog to the traditional five; leopard, lion, buffalo, elephant and rhino. Plus brown hyena, sable, eland, gemsbok, giraffe and large herds of plains game and plenty of birds.

Wild dogs are a specialty of the area and due to their rarity and fascinating behaviour, are a wonderful sight. They are also known as Cape hunting dogs or painted dogs because of their tri-coloured (black, white and tan) abstract coat. Wild Dogs are Africa’s most formidable hunters (followed by hyena and lion), and the essence of their successful social system is co-operative hunting and food sharing. Not only do they regurgitate food for the young but the babysitter gets fed too. They travel great distances while hunting and as a result often traverse farmland where they were almost shot to extinction. Luckily they are thriving in Madikwe.

As a malaria free game reserve, and because of its excellent game viewing and the fact that it is not overcrowded, Madikwe is a sought after destination. You can easily combine a couple of nights (though you will be sure to wish you had more time) with a trip to Cape Town or the Garden Route and not have to worry about malaria tablets. For honeymooners and couples in general, the reserve hosts a wide variety of top-end luxury accommodation that would satisfy even the most discerning of traveller. For families, Madikwe is one of the most family friendly reserves in Africa and many lodges offer excellent kids programmes to ensure that there will never be a dull moment on safari.
