- Luxurious Bush Camp
Mchenja takes luxury in the bush to a level previously not seen in Zambia. The rooms and general facilities make this an extra special camp.
- Top Game Viewing
South Luangwa is one of Africa’s top big game destinations, with high densities of wildlife; night drives make sightings of lion and leopard particularly common.
- True African Wilderness
Mchenja stands in one of the very best locations of any camp in the Valley, along the Luangwa River and under the serenely beautiful ebony trees.
- Rare Boating Experience
Mchenja is the only Zambian bush camp to open in February and March when the river is high. Only a few people get the opportunity to explore the Luangwa by boat.
Norman Carr Safaris is a revered name in Zambia’s South Luangwa region. Norman Carr developed the pioneering idea of taking people to look at animals and photograph them rather than hunt them. This portfolio of 5 camps offers a high standard of accommodation and conservation in the South Luangwa National Park and Liuwa National Park.

Mchenja is a small camp with only five tented chalets; three on one side and two on the other. Each is a big and very comfortable octagonal tent – designed to be light and airy, wide canvas windows let the breeze through – with an en-suite, open-air bathroom with a (hot & cold) shower, a flush toilet and hand-basin in the corner.
It is possible to combine Mchenja with the other three Norman Carr bush camps – Luwi, Nsolo and Kakuli. Walking out of one camp early in the morning and arriving at the next for brunch to find your bags already waiting for you is a wonderful experience. Mchenje is also one of the few bushcamps in Zambia open during the Green Season from January to March.
